The Ruffell Family
The Ruffell family is yet another family of engineers who lived in Moscow at least from 1847 - there is an 1847 death certificate that states that a British subject William Youitt died in the 3d block of Yakimanka part of Moscow in the house belonging to the British subject Richard Ruffell. The death certificate is in Russian but signed by Matthew Camidge, the then Minister of the British Chapel. The first Ruffell entry in the British Chapel register dates back to September 15, 1870 - the day when Alexander Nicolas Ruffell and Adele Anna Freytag were married. One of the numerous witnesses was William Hopper. The Ruffells were plumbers, and owned a plumbing company. Among their clients was the Bolshoi Theatre, where - according to the 1859 contract that can be found at the Russian State History Archive - they were responsible for the maintenance of a steam engine.
It is interesting to try and look for their house in Yakimanka part of Moscow. The 1903 Moscow Address Book gives a more exact address: Maly Uspenskiy Pereulok, plot 317/313, belonging to Alexander Alexandrovich Ruffell:
The 1903 Moscow Address Book also provides a detailed map with these plots:
In today's Moscow the same Lane is called 1st Kazachiy rather than Maly Uspenskiy, but it is the same place and here's a building that is located there. One can rent space in it, and according to the advertisement, the house was built in 1862 and reconstructed in 2003. It would be great to see what it looked like before the reconstruction, the top floor was probably added in 2003, but at least it hasn't been completely demolished!
The Archive of St.Andrew's Anglican Church in Moscow happens to have a Birthday Book that most certainly belonged to somebody from this family, I think the last owner was Ellen Adele Emily. The book is interesting in that its entries are in two languages: English and Russian, and in different handwritings, from old 19th century to reasonably modern 20th century made with the help of a ball-point pen.
The Ruffell family descendants that I know of live in Russia and Ukraine.
